well, according to the crowd I hang out with, Santa Claus and that Xmas stuff
is a symbolic sublimation (not quite the right word, but general concept)
of the ideas and
symbols surrounding the Amanita Muscaria mushroom - the red with white dots
on the cap mushroom that reindeer in Siberia eat and then the shamans drink
the
reindeer pee and "go flying" to talk to the spirits / God / gods / pick
your deity.

Christianity is a mongrel religion, full of recycled ideas and updated as
needed for
the local culture. Not knocking it though - Paulinity, on the other hand,
which frequently
masquerades as Christianity, is responsible for a lot of the evil
throughout history.
