Dear Susan!

Thank you for your beautiful mail about Kali. I lived with Kali
(metaphorically) for a few years up until more recently. I was so afraid of
K in the beginning, and Kali tore my life up completely. But not only that.
She fed me with a fire I never throught existed. A fire to bring about
powerful change in my life.. I was ferocious in everything I took on..

When we sing Kirtans, I love singing about Kali Ma.. Even though the
pictures may seem scarey with the skulls and the severed head and blood red
tongue, I get tears in my eyes and joy in my heart whenever I think of her.
The Kali aspect has given me so much in my life, and she truly is Mother!
Now my life is more gentle, more free flowing, so I don't see Kali as often.
But I know that she is still there. And she is beautiful!

Jaya Jaya Ma, Jaya Kali Ma!

Love
Gustaf

*** may I post on opinion on this? Just an opinion based on my own
experience. It may help.

You write:"When I think of "divine" and "loving" I tend to think of
Mary,
Isis, Sophia, Tara, Kwan-yin.

My experience of Kali/Medussa is that she would just as soon kill you as
kiss you."

Kali and Medusa are aspects of the Divine Feminine as are the other
Goddesses you have mentioned. The Divine Feminine expresses itself
through
many faces depending on the culture. Kali is one of the primary
representations of the Divine Mother which comes out of the Hindu
iconography. The Medusa myth is a corruption of matriarchal values.

Kali is loved and worshipped by those who have an affinity for the
Divine
Mother. And they get mad when they think you are talking trash about
their
mother. Like a mother, Kali has a destroyer aspect. People, through
misunderstanding of what Kali is, ascribe all forms of violence,
including
those that are seen as capricious and sadistic, to her. That is
unfortunate.

Her function is the destroyer of the ego. She also destroys things that
are
to make way for new creation. I invoke her when things seem out of
control.
She burns old things away, leaving scorched earth, so that new things
can
grow. The bite in this is I, we, have no control over the outcome. Once
one
surrenders a situation to Kali then whatever happens and falls out is
according to Divine Order and if my will is not in accordance with
divine
order, oh well, too bad. This is what happens and if I don't like it, I
never should have asked for her assistance. She burns through things
with a
heat that feels ice cold. She is an entity who rules in the Void.

Trying to control outcomes is a function of ego and her function is to
destroy ego so one learns quickly not to be attached to outcomes or else
do
not ask for her assistance. Her role is to restore divine order through
destroying what the ego creates. I don't ask for her help very often.
She's
the clean up crew.

If you have female family members that are being mean to you and you
attribute that to Kali you might want to research who and what Kali is
and
does. She does not serve the ego or ego's needs. Something that serves
the
ego's needs is called magic and is a way of controlling the environment
or
people.

Ask for Kali's protection the next time you feel oppressed. Careful
though.
You may get a whole lot more than you ever anticipated. That's what
happens
when we invoke the Dieties.

Namaste,

Susan
