I have never posted to this site before. I have been
receiving the postings for about a month, now, and
lately watching what has been going back and forth
with this particular thread.

I have both enjoyed and have been disturbed by some of
the things that I have seen going back and forth. The
dynamics are very interesting. It is mostly to this
that I want to speak.

The thing that I notice foremost is the language of
some of the postings. When people are pointed and
blaming in their language, i.e. You... you... you...
this is something to pay attention to. It is a call to
fight and an easy way to put your audience on the
defensive. This is also true of using vulgarities or
obsenities but this also may be someone's way of
getting special attention to what is being said.

Secondly,
Truth, in my opinion, is a matter of perspective. I
believe that we are all on different paths. We may or
may not have the same goals or ends to the journey and
it is not necessary for any of us to tell others what
is right. I think it is necessary to question and
helpful to be open to the possibilities of the
universe. Beauty exists and people are amazing and do
amazing things.

Lastly,
Using ancient texts is very tricky business. Some of
the Bible was written thousands of years ago. It was
written in ancient language and some of it is
difficult to translate even in contemporary Hebrew.
The words that have retained their meanings are
sometimes mistranslated. The word that is translated
today in the Bible as "fear" for example, in Hebrew
means "to stand in awe of," or, "to respect." This
simple thing puts a whole different spin on some of
our beliefs and a core problem that a lot of us have
with Christianity.
Everything that has ever been written has pieces of it
that are to be taken in context of the times. For
example, some of the Bible talks about marrying people
they were related to. At the time it was written, laws
for the inheritance of possessions and land were much
different. It is my understanding that it is believed
by Bible scholars that the reason was to keep lands
from being passed to foreigners.
Much of the Bible contradicts itself. It is my
personal belief that it was intended this way so that
each of us can choose what to believe for us as
individuals.

Let's continue the discussion. I would like to think
that some of us are able to learn from these
sometimes-very-difficult-to-manage dialogues... no
matter the intention.
