What I have learned recently: 
 
The pineal gland is attached to the third ventricle of 
the brain. It contains a pigment similar to that in 
the retina of the eye and produces DMT.

It is no coincidence that the most potent family of 
hallucinogens are called "indole hallucinogens". Do a 
google search. 
 
Here is another source concerning those purplish 
Psilocybin mushrooms. It is this active substance that 
causes the mushrooms to turn blue.

No wonder the visual system is so profoundly affected. 
BTW, Viagra also resembles these indole compounds 
though it has no psychoactivity. It does tint the 
vision blue. 
 
There is something about deep blue/purple that affects 
people. The color has a strong impact. Think about 
black lights.
