Dear Rome,

I have been thinking about you all day, and this story came into my head for
some reason.

Just as Sakyamuni (Sage of Sakyas) was born under a Bo tree, so did he
return to a Bo tree twenty-nine years and reach enlightenment. This path to
the Bodhi Tree and enlightenment was long and arduous; Siddartha left his
family and noble life in search of the enlightened path. He went prominent
Hindu and Ascetic monks and soaked up all their knowledge they possessed yet
he was not released from this world. Six years after leaving his life of
luxury the Bodhisattva settled under a sacred tree, the Bodhi Tree, in the
town of Gaya, and proclaimed, "skin, sinew, and bone may dry up as it will,
my flesh and blood may dry, but without attaining complete enlightenment I
will not leave this seat".

By this time the Bodhi Tree had reached maturity, and Siddartha Guatama was
now a man. Siddartha had felt his enlightenment was near, as did the evil
god of passion, Mara, who began to tempt the Bodhisattva. She first
tempted him by summoning her demon army to crush the meditating Bodhisattva,
but Sakyamuni was protected by his merit and maitri (friendly love). Mara
then tried to match Siddartha's merit in life, and called her attendants to
bear witness. The Bodhisattva, without a witness to vouch for his merit
touched the Earth with his right hand, and Mother Earth took notice and
resounded with an earthquake. Sensing defeat, Mara made one last effort to
sway Sakyamuni, and summoned his daughters, Discontent, Delight, and Desire
to seduce Siddartha. As the day was coming to an end Mara realized that she
was unsuccessful and left the Bodhisattva. When Siddartha achieved
enlightenment it is said that the Bodhi Tree rained red flowers upon the
Buddha.

Upon attaining enlightenment the Buddha stayed under the Bodhi Tree for
seven days and meditated on the Chain of Causation, it is also believed that
at this time he set in motion the Wheel of Truth (Four Noble Truths). He
then moved on to spread his teachings and try to help others rid themselves
of dukkha (suffering), until he reached the age of eighty and left this
world due to an inadvertent case of food poisoning. According to Buddhist
myth, the Bodhi Tree also died on the day the Buddha, but was resurrected
the next day.

Is it possible that you are reaching a place in your tantra that your mara
does not want you to get to?
