good post there, Mia.  Your mom and mine would certainly be best friends :) 
I think I'm finally getting over the guilt dumped on me for being the  
"disruptive" 
one...  Anyhow, I finished reading "Heart, Self, and Soul" by Robert Frager. 
It's a psychologically oriented look at Sufism and Frager talks a bit about the 
use of compassion and the limitations - I quote "If we are so compassionate 
that all we can do is commiserate with others and pat them on the back, we 
will not be able to serve those who need a more tough-minded, no-nonsense 
response".  This idea goes against the grain of the new age lovey doveyness 
but is an excellent indicator of true understanding if you are trying to  
figure out 
if a "teacher" really does "have the right stuff" (or at least people who  
claim to 
be "advanced")
