Sir Richard Burton (the dervish) may have translated all kinds of things
(in fact from what I know of him - he did)
Some were not to be taken literally except by
. . . those who take these things in such a way

He could of course have been a kidnapper and rapist
but I doubt it.
I have only read a couple of articles on him so know very little.
He probably felt Victorian England needed
to be scandalised but I don't know enough to comment too much

The original
creator could have been a mundane sensualist
- again I doubt that also. Again I do not know.

Perhaps many things such as this have a deeper meaning - perhaps it is
just superficial and perverse . . .
Perhaps both or something else . . .

We read into things our own noise
and then when we quieten down we are able to
listen and acknowledge the wisdom that surrounds us

And funny thing - that wisdom does not come from us.

Dervishes such as the Bektashi were accused
(in patriarchal Islam) of all kinds of impropriety
and illegality because they invited women
to their meetings (today in the West it would be shocking if women
were excluded).

Dervishes also have a habit of talking
of internal states in terms of
intoxication (advocating illegal wine drinking)
slavery (advocating repression)
and so on . . .

In a similar way the Tibetan Book of the Dead
refers to inner mystical states
rather than a manual of what no one has ever written
(dead people can not write)
so we rely on the 'telepathy' of attendant scribes . . .
. . . but then we believe what pleases us . . .
The mundane, the ridiculous, different layers of truth . . .

>>In Sufism, 'Haughter' (a special kind of humility)
>>is seen as an excellent quality BUT not in the mundane sense
>>that most people understand this.
>>Khidr (the Secret Prophet of the Sufis) is not reknowed for humility
>>in fact in a famous encounter with Moses he teaches
>>that prophet a thing or three . . .

> I'd like to read that one.

'Moses' and 'Khidr' at google should find it.

Only to the egoic.
I have no interest either way.

The question is really of where one is coming from
inflated sense of self
or inflated capacity to serve (other than oneself)

Everything has boundaries
Emptiness is defined by the boundaries of existence.
"Emptiness is form, form is emptiness' is the Mahayana description

There is a New Age idea that people without
boundaries are somehow freerer.

Most people here will understand the importance
of closing down the extremes of sensitivity
to life, negativity and so on.

Boundaries are very important.
You too will understand this
from your own experience . . .

Some say it is the emptiness that makes the boundaries of the vase
meaningful
and some that without the container of the vase, the space would
be without value . . .

Many thanks
it has changed into another form.
Good idea - set it up and bring the gang
Let me know and I will find any stragglers . . .
:-)
