oooh... I may be reading too much into how you stated things (need to see
how she stated it),
but (after the book I just finished reading) "hoping to be a teacher"
raises a little red flag.

this general topic was covered in "Do You Need a Guru" by Mariana
Caplan. It's an excellent
book about the problems Westerners have with the "guru" theory (and how
that relates to the
psychological framework of Western society (vs. Eastern)), the benefits and
costs of having a
"guru", some ideas of how to be discerning when looking for a
teacher... and the assumptions
underlying why some teachers say "no other paths". I thought she did an
excellent job
of finding the Middle Way between "total slavish obedience to a master"
(the popular misconception
of Westerner towards the Eastern view) and "heeding only your inner guru"
(as a lot of New Agers
would attest to)
