oooh...  I may be reading too much into how you stated things (need to see  
how she stated it), 
but (after the book I just finished reading) "hoping to be a teacher"  
raises a little red flag.

this general topic was covered in "Do You Need a Guru" by Mariana  
Caplan.  It's an excellent 
book about the problems Westerners have with the "guru" theory (and how  
that relates to the 
psychological framework of Western society (vs. Eastern)), the benefits and  
costs of having a 
"guru", some ideas of how to be discerning when looking for a  
teacher...  and the assumptions 
underlying why some teachers say "no other paths".  I thought she did an  
excellent job 
of finding the Middle Way between "total slavish obedience to a master"  
(the popular misconception 
of Westerner towards the Eastern view) and "heeding only your inner guru"  
(as a lot of New Agers 
would attest to)
