Many ways to open the heart...
"The Heart: The Throne of God when open , a tomb when closed."
(from the excellent heartbeat2000 website) Check out *this* page:

I think the heart, on an emotional level, might well be described as a
"yearning machine". Not a craven wanting machine, mind you. The
self-aggrandizing ego plays no part, can find no foothold here for its
nefarious agendas. The heart knows no bitterness, and suffers much
the same as it experiences bliss; with a kind of serene detachment.
Many states of being can bring about an opening of the heart. A sincere
desire to know the will of the creator is but one. A selfless desire for
unity
with the One Thing that is all things- that'd probably do the trick.
You can
probably pop the hood on that baby with a screwdriver in one hand, and a
frosty cold beverage in the other. I love these quotes from Ramana:

"The ‘I´ casts off the illusion of ‘I ´ and yet remains as "I". Such is
the paradox
of Self-realization."

"The Heart is the only Reality." Ramana evidently found the way to live
in his
heart on a permanent basis. I think this is what eludes many of us. It's
an easy
enough place to visit, until the ego leads us back to the world of
struggle, where
suffering seems so real. I can really only speak from my own
experience- your
mileage may vary. Tears of joy spring directly from the heart. Follow
them back and rest in that place... Michael
