Dear Michael,

The best of luck with your friend.

The following site might help.

href=http://www.go-symmetry.com/health/bipolar.htm

B vitamins are said to be very helpful as many of us are low in those. see:

"A twenty-one-year-old female known to suffer from bipolar type I disorder
developed features of a pseudodementia. Following prompt initial response to
treatment with antidepressants, there was an early recurrence of cognitive
impairment. Blood investigations confirmed a macrocytic anaemia and vitamin B12 and
folate deficiencies. There was dramatic resolution of cognitive impairment
after vitamin replacement. This suggested the occurrence of a reversible
nutritional dementia and reinforced the need to rule out secondary organic causes of
psychiatric symptoms even in patients previously diagnosed with a primary
psychiatric disorder. " from:

Actually I think it is very ON topic. It's interesting that one of the
"causes" of bipolar
disorder listed on the site which Martin sent on
http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/bipolstory01.cfm

says that bipolar may result because of changes in the brain.

Kundalini energy also seems to make changes in the brain--so there may be
similarities.

Dennis Gersten in Are you Getting Enlightened or Losing your Mind, How to
master everyday and extraordinary spiritual Experiences deals directly with the
subject. His distinctions are interesting, but sometimes murky:

"Where the spiritual person's mind becomes ever quieter and more one-pointed
as a result of spirtual practice, the namic's mind becomes less peaceful and
more scattered. In many ways, the manic and the spiritual aspirant are
traveling in opposite directions. Where the normal person and the spiritual aspirant
make plans that are appropriate to their dreams and talents, the manic's
dreams are much greater than their talents. As a result, the manic fails in both
secular and sacred pursuits. p. 138
