Dear Mike,

You ask very wise questions! :))

I would say you experienced Shaktipat. It sounds like a very mild awakening
as your friend promised. :) Some say that everyone, always, is awake, so
he simply gave you a bit of a nudge. Since it had an effect, you were
obviously ready for the experience. :))

Without knowing more about the man, it is hard to give you an answer as to
how it might be best for you to proceed. You are wise to be a bit cautious,
though. What you are describing is a bit in the Siddhi (power) department. Many
say powers are a distraction from self realisation See Ramana Maharshi
quotes below*.

Others like Georg Feuerstein write: "The fully accomplished Tantric adept
(siddha) is not merely a liberated being but also a thaumaturgist for whom the
laws of the material cosmos are no limitation...The paranormal powers...are
simply manifestations of the divine Power, or shakti. In contrast to the typical
position of Advaita Vedanta, The Yoga-Shikha-Upanishad unequivocally applauds
the possession of paranormal powers. (see further quotes below**.)

The question of charging for spiritual services depends a bit on motive, I
think. Is his main concern healing others or making money?

You seem pretty clear headed, and seem to have a natural talent. I would
listen to your gut as to how to proceed. You might also consider learning a bit
of Hatha Yoga, or other discipline to better prepare your body for more of the
energy.

Fuesten again writes: The declared purpose of Hatha Yoga is to prepare
the body first for the rigors of intensive meditation, as practiced in Raja
Yoga, and then for the onslaught of enlightenment, which inevitably leads to
significant subtle energetic and biochemical changes. In the unprepared body, the
descent of divine energy (shakti) can cause havoc...p. 264.

I suspect whatever you choose will be karmicly ok for you as your motives
seem pretty pure. Your friend makes his own choices! ;)

Love, Hillary
* "...what are these powers for? The would-be occultist...desires to
display the siddhis(powers) so that others may appreciate him. He seeks
appreciation, and if it is not forthcoming he will not be happy...
Which is the real power? Is it to increase prosperity or bring about peace?
That which results in peace is the highest perfection (siddhi). Sri Ramana
Maharshi, Talks, 30th January, 1935 and
"The powers are sought by the mind which must be kept alert, whereas the Self
is realised when the mind is destroyed. The powers manifest only when there
is the ego. The Ego makes you aware others and in its absence there are no
others to be seen. The Self is beyond the ego and is realised after the ego is
eliminated...
"Self-Realisation may be accompanied by occult powers or it may not be. If
the person had sought such powers before Realisation, he may get the powers
after Realisation. There are others who had not sought such powers and had
attempted only Self-Realisation. They do not manifest such powers.
These powers may also be sought and gained even after Self-Realisation. But
then they are used for a definite purpose, i.e., the benefit of others." Sri
Ramani Maharshi 20th December,1938 Talks.

** 'Even as gold is determined by assaying goldsmiths, one should identify an
adept and jivan-mukta by his powers. Surely a transcendental (alaukika)
quality will sometimes be evident in him. However, the person lacking powers
should be deemed bound."'p. 261 Tantra, the Path of Ecstasy.
Fuerstein devotes a whole chapter on the subject (Enlightenment and the
Hidden Powers of the Mind)

He quotes the Yoga-Shikha-Upanishad as mildly poking fun at those who do not
have total control of the body. "The true knower (jnanin)...transcends all
karma and is liberated while yet alive. He appears to have a physical frame,
yet is as insubstantial as empty space and therefore cannot in reality be
located, touched, hurt, or killed. This text aslo distinguishes between natural and
artificial paranormal powers:

In this world the powers are twofold: artificial (kalpita) and nonartificial
(akalpita).

The powers that come about through the cultivation of alchemy, herbs,
rituals, magic, and such practices as mantra [recitation] are called artificial. The
powers arising from such cultivation are temporary and of little energy.
However, [those powers] that arise without such cultivation, of their own accord,
through self-reliance in the case of those who are exclusively intent on
union (yoga) with their own Self are dear to the Lord. Such [spontaneously]
arising powers are known as devoid of artifice (kalpana). [Such spontaneous
powers] are accomplished...enduring, of great energy, conforming to the [divine]
will (iccha), springing from one's own Yoga. They arise after a long time in
those who are devoid of [karmic] traits (vasana). p. Tantra The Path of Ecstasy
by Georg Feuerstein. p.260-261
