While viewing Angela Farmer's video, The Feminine Unfolding, something she said
popped out for me. It was along the lines of how the intellect does not like
imagery, as images have indistinct boundaries - they are interpretable. On the
other hand, the body loves images, thrives on them, understands them fully.

Something clicked home, then, about the difference between scripted
visualizations, which seem to move from intellect to body, and images, which
may be understood to connect first with the body and then may become known to
the intellect.

The kind of images I am thinking of are like symbols, and their ability to
connect to archetypal images are what make them fast and powerful. Then it
struck me that asana is symbolic image. "Down Dog" sources back to a very
primal form, for instance.

Recently, I read a book called The DaVinci Code. Symbol plays a large role in
the plot. The author points to the same 'flexible' nature of symbol that Angela
Farmer points to in image - they have indistinct boundaries and are
interpretable. In the case of the DaVinci Code, the symbols appear to be one
thing, but as one digs deeper, layers are revealed, some of those layers
seemingly counter to other layers, but nonetheless, they all live within a
singular symbol.

Our practice of asana can be like that. Through familiarizing ourselves with
asana through repetition, we have opportunity to delve into the many layers of
that asana, be they alignment, energetic, organic...

It is remarkable to think of asana as symbolic image, and get a sense of 'the
forming of asana' as a ritualized form of getting in touch with the energies of
that symbolic image.

best to you all...

(who is off to seek out the symbolic images of 'beach' on vacation next week...
