Greetings Nina,

A) On control of the abdominal wall during inhaling: I for one am able
to cause the abdominal wall to protrude far, far further without
inhaling at all if I wish, than taking a genuine deep breath with
control of the wall as Lysebeth recommends. This would seem to mean that
the system does not allow descent of the diaphragm to put the abdominal
cavity under pressure (pumping blood around) as in a genuine inhale,
because blood pumping should be coupled with respiration. A sort of
auxiliary heart able to be operated independently of breathing would be
dangerous. During a potbellying maneuver without inhaling the abdominal
wall is caused to give way to prevent a pressure build-up. This would
tie up with the supposed inability of the abdominal wall muscles to act
as an antagonist to the diaphragm.

B) From what I know about the passing on of ideas and systems of
thought, it seems quite plausible that westerners have wrongly
understood pranayama, particularly since the language of the original
texts is not understood by yoga practitioners here and so much has to be
passed on by an actual yogi rather than through books.

C) I've written on my personal experiences in the posting to Hillary.

Generally spiritual and genuine pranayam language is superior, but
misunderstandings due to western medicine have to be tackled
theoretically, because its theories are often wrong. I do admire you
saying

Describing the direct effects of breathing in this way is much more
valuable than talk about "bronchi and alveoli" as in western medical
texts. The Orientals developed better breathing without knowing what
these things are.

Greetings, Richard.
