bellows and suction are key concepts here. Having taken voice training for many, many years, have had much experience working with people to overcome the need to control the activity of breathing ('making it work'). If you perceive of breathing as a bellows, with the activity of creating the suction at the bottom of the diaphragm, the air coming in does all the work - there is no tension throughout the body. Breathing actually occurs much lower than almost anyone realizes.

After this behavior is more or less comfortable and automatic, the understanding of the sinusoidal nature of breathing will assist in the gentle behavior of breathing that supports the meditative state. It's all a circular thing...
