Yes, copyright problems, amongst other things. The guidelines state
that the emails are publicly archived, and that posting to the list is
giving consent, but... I think putting them into a share able format would
be pushing things.

Periodically Hillary and I get people writing asking to have their
names removed from the archives. Just last week, a poster asked to have a
few dozen posts he wrote in 1996 deleted. It is our policy to keep the
archives intact, so we decline to delete posts, however we do anonymize
archive entries, upon request. Frankly it's a hassle!! However, if there
were a few hundred copies of the archives distributed, it would be
impossible. Some folks would not be pleased...

I could probably set up a limited FTP access, for anyone who wanted to
download their own private copy of the archives, there are all kinds of
programs capable of text searching your hard drive... but beware, to upload
them all usually takes me about 6 hours, using a cable internet connection.

Probably there are also some spider-type search engines that work with
the individual's browser to search websites, but I don't know what they
are. I used to use webferret, but they changed.

I am sorry the search engine is not more effective. If anyone has
suggestions of a better one, that is better with multiple keywords...
especially if they also have the ability to install it, that would be great!

I sometimes find that using google to search the archives works better,
but not always. The results are the opposite, too few.

I just checked, and found that there is some error in the google window
on the archive search page, it uses the other search engine. ooooops. You
have to go directly to google.

Personally, I find the present search engine works fine! There are a
few occasions where I have posted links in response to inquiries, usually
it only took me a few minutes to find what I was looking for. That may be
partly because I have a good memory for the threads and authors.

Sometimes I also use my eudora search feature, and then locate the
files on the website. Of course, I am probably the only person on the list
who has all the list archives as original emails.

The archives were unavailable, for YEARS, because I was looking for a
way to upload them as one large file per year, and use a search engine that
would collect relevant posts and send them to the user as an html page.
Especially since so many of the original archives are digests.

In the end, I gave up. I found a program that would turn individual
emails into html pages and indexes, and that is what I use to make the
archives at present. >25,000 html documents, not including this year.

If I could find a program that would change digests back into
individual posts, I would apply it to the digests... my current web hosting
account has plenty of space.

I have often thought that publishing the most interesting posts into
one large volume would be a fabulous resource, but... to do that I would
need to track down hundreds, if not thousands of people to get copyright
consent, and the job of editing and indexing the information is more than
daunting. What we are working on now, the "threads" section, seems the
best alternative.

As for redundancy... The archives are on the website, on my hard
drive and backed up on CD, many times. I've been meaning to mail Hillary
and some of the other moderators a CD copy, too.

So many things to do, only so many hours in a day... Realize, I have
literally devoted years of my life to this resource, as a more-than-full
time job. Really glad that there are now co-moderators helping out!
Volunteers always welcome...
