It is an interesting question! A lot of psychology talks of them as
formless energies or tendencies that are universal to all. If they are not
universal then psychology does not class them as archetypes. At one stage
Jung suggested that we only interact with them by forming images or
projections of them. This can be either internal or external and done
consciously or unconsciously. This is the place that the symbols and
cultural differences arise. As JR suggested I guess the boundaries of
individual cultures are dissolving toward a more global culture and a much
wider choice of symbols is available to our unconscious. In my case, most
of my imagery comes from Western ideas. The bible, cabalistic, magical,
alchemical and psychological traditions speak to me most loudly. For
example, I see Kundalini as being the snake that tempted Eve, the snake that
Moses caused to rise on a stick before the pharaoh and the snake that Jesus
advised us to be as wise as. Yet, the word "Kundalini" is from Sanskrit,
and foreign to Western tradition. For me using this word is also a symbol
that reminds me of the mystery of the force that challenges us to greater
levels of consciousness.

I've been off line for a while. I've enjoyed reading the log of past posts.

Regards,
Julie.
