I think this gets at two perennial questions:
1) Is prana kundalini?
2) Is the ultimate enlightenment at the heart or the sahasrara?

As for 1)
I think prana is a precursor to kundalini, not kundalini. I also feel though
that prana prepares for kundalini, and then kundalini prepares for the
subtle activity of prana. Of course I don't know what Ramana Maharshi's real
state of realization was. But from reading his books reasonably carefully,
and from my sense of him from his photos (and you can all take that with a
grain of salt if you like), I believe that he was (only) an adept of the
wisdom winds of the heart. He did master the ability to fuse his
individuated conscious awareness fully with the very subtle winds and
consciousness at heart. As a result he realized AT_NOSPAM AT_NOSPAM the Self'' and lived in a
constant state of wakefulness. I do not believe that his kundalini was fully
activated; much less do I believe that it rose all the way to the sahasrara
and then penetrated his heart. Particularly absent from (at least my
recollection of) his writings are the expressions of the vibrant pulsating
unity of the universe and one's personal awareness (union of dhatu and
j~nana) - the ultimate sense that one's awareness pervades the universe.

Which brings to 2)
As kundalini rises to the heart, individuated consciousness becomes
stabilized and fused in the Self/Buddha nature/primordial wisdom awareness.
One lives, like Ramana Maharshi in a state of constant wakefulness. I don't
believe that RM achieved this state through kundalini awakening. He achieved
it through stabilizing the wisdom awareness at the heart by self-enquiry. In
this state one's awareness is still individuated and localized however. If
one reflects on alpha centauri for example, one DOES feel that alpha
centauri is also one's awareness; however, one DOES NOT spontaneously feel
that alpha centauri is pervaded by one's awareness. It is only when the knot
of Rudra is penetrated and the sahasrara opens that one lives in a state of
total spontaneous unity.

Or so it seems.
Mangalam, Kurt

Some will of read this, if not it's one of the most interesting Kundalini
statements made. I've read of hints about this, so it's nice to goto the
source.

Ramana Maharshi. -"Be as you are" pg 142

"If the kundalini reaches sahasrara, it will not result in realisation. For
final realisation the kundalini must go beyond the sahasrara, down another
nadi(psychic nerve) he called amritanadi(also called the paranadi or
jivanadi) and into the Heart-centre on the right hand side of the chest.
Since Sri Ramana maintained that self-enquiry would automatically send the
kundalini to the Heart-centre, he taught that separate yoga exercises were
unnecessary."

"The Self is reached by the search for the origin of the ego and by diving
into the Heart. This is the direct method of Self-realisation. One who
adopts it need not worry about nadis, the brain centre[sahasrara], the
sushumna, the paranadi, the kundalini, pranayama or the six
centres[chakras]."

I've read about several people who've opened sahasrara and yet they've not
mentioned the re-routing of the kundalini. Most people assume that all
chakra's opening equals enlightenment. The pro's and con's of this
technique are interesting. I have a theory that by using his technique,
once Self realised, all of the chakra's open anyway, but it's merely a
theory. I think I read somewhere and I don't recall the source about "an
energy reset" once Self realisation happens. This is only speculation.

So it's a quicker, safer and more direct method, and yet few people follow
it. Probably because they believe to achieve this wonderful experience you
need to walk on glass before you reach the ocean.
