Subject: [K-list] Snake Story

Dear List,

With all of my experiences throughout my life, or should I say "very strange" experiences...this is perhaps the most incredible. I seem to have the ability to manifest things in nature, such as birds, snakes, spiders. If I settle my mind, I seem to even know what the weather will do in the next season. Perhaps I should pay more attention, and also, perhaps this is why I was brought to New Mexico: to pay attention.

Yesterday, Thursday, I thought about rattlesnakes. Immediately, I chanted the mantra, "they're over there, they're over there, they're over THERE!" Well, this morning I let the dogs out about 6:30 and yep, they cornered a rattler. Damn! I don't need this at this time! No one was bitten and I rounded up the crew and put them in, but here was the durn snake!

Folks, I can't afford $500 of vet treatment for a bitten pup right now and of course, I don't want anyone to go through the agony of a snake bite. I have a fish pond with a waterfall. We're in drought conditions again in New Mexico and those snakes smell water a mile away -- literally. So anyway, I called a friend to come and "get" the snake. Whether that meant killing the rattler or whatever, all I wanted was to get it gone! The sun was rising, getting hotter by the second and the durn snake was set to take off, and I couldn't get my friend on the phone...I had to watch the snake so I'd know where it was, or went...or slithered.

So this is what I did: I got an empty plastic pot from a water lily and set myself to put it on top of the rattler until my friend came. I got only within FIVE feet of the snake when all of a sudden, I felt this horrible, awful, almost indescribable FEAR shoot through my entire being. It's that feeling when you have a bad dream and try to wake up, or if you're out of body and not quite making the re-entry and you feel that painfulness -- you know what I mean. Then the next second, the snake jumped up into attack position and rattled..if you've ever heard that noise, it just sends chills.

So, did the snake FEEL my fear? Did I feel the snake's fear? Do snakes have an uncanny ability to <feel> or grok what a human being is thinking? I was meaning to bucket this guy in order for someone to come and kill him. However, I didn't attack him, I didn't even come within five feet. And the FEELING I had! ohmigod...pure terror. I realize no one knows whether it was me or the rattler. But that snake, I tell you, had NO reason to rear up into strike position and rattle. Except for what I was feeling -- him or me?

I have a friend who runs the Rattlesnake Museum in Albuquerque. I'm going to telephone tomorrow and ask him the same questions and what he's experienced re the "mind thing" in snakes.

Oh, BTW, my friend came and put the snake in a bucket, alive, and took it away and put it somewhere else. But they'll be back. ;-( Maybe I'd better think about swallows instead. Any thoughts, related experiences appreciated!

Love,

Hety
