( I've been off-line for a few days, building myself a new computer desk! )

I think rather, it has to do with available leisure time.

We westerners take our leisure for granted, but even 100 years ago
there was no days off, an 18 hour workday was commonplace, and no rest for
the average working class. People in stage one and two were simply too busy
to have time to contemplate the eternal verities. Student to householder,
even children had to work, and so there was no time for serious spiritual
contemplation till the children were grown and supporting the parents. Even
then, a lot of grandparents were kept busy babysitting and doing whatever
they could do.

In the East, the high Caste were Brahmins... the rich could affoard
time to meditate and entertain Holy Men.

In Medieval European times, it was the same. Older people whose
children were grown had the option of entering a convent or monastery, to
prepare their souls for death. Up till then, they were too busy, whether
they were a peasant or a Lord. Peasants had no time off, even the
occasional holiday-Holy day there were things to do, and managing an estate
kept the gentry busy.
