the best book i ever saw on this subject is:
"The Occult Conspiracy: Secret Societies - Their Influence and Power in
World History"
by Michael Howard

it has well-researched material on the history of the medieval alchemists
and the Templar Knights through modern secret organizations, and their
influence on world events... it is not as much of a conspiracy-nut kind of
book as the title suggests...
