Now this caught my attention. I started practicing Zen a little over ten
years ago (with significant lapses in the interim). Shortly thereafter I
was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes (childhood onset at age 37 -- oof!). It
turns out the leader of this Zen order (Kwan Um -- Korean Zen) is also a
Type-1 diabetic, and come to find out, so is the resident Zen master. Since
Zen is closely related to martial arts (the local Zen master was into
Chinese kick boxing, for example), I've always wondered if there was a
connection. Zazen involves focusing ones attention on the lower abdomen,
which is near the pancreas. *shrug*

Since Type-2, the more common type of diabetes, is caused by way the body
assimilates insulin (rather than in a problem with its production, as in
Type-1), it makes sense that raising the body temperature or increasing the
metabolism would help burn blood sugar. Simple exercise is probably the
easiest way accomplish this.
