Subject: [K-list] Music and Dance - Nataraj aspect of Shiva
From: Bhavin Desai

On 2003/04/20 17:52, Bhavin Desai posted thus to the K-list:

Normally I do not have much specific interest in music or dance,
probably because no one encouraged me to learn and I had no motivation
to learn myself. I don't understand the technical aspects regarding
music and its production, since I have no background in music. (My BSc
and MPhil were in Mathematics.) However, when certain types of music
(including Mantra, Trance, Punjabi, Indian Classical) start to play,
then there is a rapt attention of the mind and the body starts to dance
by itself, often for several hours without fatigue.

There is no single type of music which is suitable for everyone. Each
individual should experiment, eg download some mp3s and see if they work
for you. Also, I don't stick to any one person or band, since
flexibility allows me to get the best of many people's works. My method
is to have a look (and listen!!!) in the "Top Downloads" section of
Trance/Goa and retain the ones that I like for future. Usually one can
tell within 1 minute of the first play, but in very rare cases it may be
necessary to listen several times to the whole (eg when someone has
strongly recommended a particular song).

Recall the Indian snake charmer analogy. The basket is the Muladhara
Chakra, the snake is the Kundalini, the charmer is the Self, and the
music is the trigger. As the music plays, the snake rises upwards.
That is, the Kundalini activity is manifested. As soon as the music
stops, the snake drops down into the basket.

Similarly recall the Indian rope trick. As the music plays, the rope
becomes straight and rises up higher and higher, eventually going into a
cloud. Then a boy climbs the rope and disappears into the cloud.
Shortly afterwards, his dismembered limbs are thrown down, and the crowd
gasps with astonishment. Finally the boy reappears alive and well.

The Lord of Yoga is Shiva, and one of His forms is Nataraj (Dance
King/Lord). You may have seen his dancing image surrounded by a circle
of flames. The Kundalini Shakti in each individual rises to achieve
Union/Yoga with Shiva.

Bhavin.
