Dear Rick,
I know very little about the Kabbalah. I suspect, however that the energy is
pretty much the same.

Don't know about the Kabbalah, but magic can certainly be practiced/used
outside the desire for self realisation.

I would say both. For instance, I suspect healing can take place with a
simple placement of hands on someone who is ill without a conscious awareness
that healing is taking place. St. Teresa of Avila was not trying to
levitate--she just did!
'Patricia Treece in *The Sanctified Body* quotes St. Teresa: (p. 263)
"[Rapture] comes, in general, as a shock, quick and sharp, before
you can collect your thoughts, or help yourself in any way, and
you see and feel it as a cloud, or a strong eagle rising upwards
and carrying you away on its wings....I repeat it; you feel
yourself carried away you know not whither....(You) feel how
delicious it is....(At) times it was impossible to resist at all;
my soul was carried away...and now and then the whole body as
well, so that it was lifted up from the ground."
Actually, I'd guess will-less Siddhis are more common than the willful. But
some people seem to have more control than others.
