I guess we have a very different understanding of the Divine.
According to my understanding, God is sat-cit-ananda,
being-consciousness-bliss, and that which manifests sat-cit-ananda,
is Divine. If something does not manifest the Divine, but in fact
hinders its manifestation, I then call it evil, some might call it
ignorance, or darkness. So, in my understanding, this world is not
entirely Divine. There are places in which God is manifested more
than in others. There are people who embody more of the Divine
qualities, and those who embody very little. There are things that
are good, and the things that are bad. It is not always easy to tell
them apart, but the objective good and the objective evil exist. It
is good when sat-cit-ananda is manifested in the world, and it is bad
when it is suppressed. When someone willingly hates and opposes
sat-cit-ananda, he is evil and does evil. Although God exists
everywhere, He is not manifested everywhere. This is my observation.

This looks like a rationalization, the very one used by the abused
children who grow to become child abusers: "I turned out OK, and if
it was good for me, it will be good for my kids as well". I, too, can
say that evil sometimes helped me to better know the good, but that
happened because I was completely disgusted and outraged by evil and
ran to its opposite, not because evil, as such, would posess some
positive quality that helped me. In fact, the good things were the
ones that helped me, and the evil just made me sick and attempted to
draw me down to the bottom. It has no positive value whatsoever, and
the only good that can come out of it is to make us sick enough never
to think about going there.

>To me, "evil" implies a moral judgment somewhere.

Moral judgments are the best thing about being human. We can make
them, and we can choose what we see as good, and what we reject as
evil. By constantly rejecting evil and choosing good, we embody
sat-cit-ananda into ourselves, becoming truly Divine. Without moral
judgments, one could go around and do whatever he wanted - it
wouldn't matter whether he killed, raped or bought somebody flowers -
after all, it would be a moral judgment to say that buying someone
flowers is better than killing him.

>Hah--you got me to come out from my usual lurking place & talk!

You see, that's what evil does, disturbs your peace. :))
