This is the reason why having a Guru can be extremely helpful. A Guru
can control the speed and intensity of the Kundalini. In this way,
nothing happens that one can't handle. When we try to forcibly awaken
the Kundalini, it can be really crazy! I know of cases where people had
to be institutionalized for a nervous breakdown! These are experiences
to bring us beyond the mind to the Self. That's why I love my Guru so
much.

Daniel,

In general there seems to be a difference of perception regarding
teachers with respect to the "East" and the "West".

In the East the Instructor/Teacher/Master/Guru/Swami/Rishi is highly
respected, often as much as God (more precisely, usually as one of the
particular forms taken by the Formless Attributeless Timeless One God).
This also filters down into respect for ordinary
school/college/university teachers.

In the West the ordinary teachers are not generally respected. This
filters up into neutrality (or even hostility in cases) towards Gurus
etc.

Being Indian and living in the UK, I have had many decades of experience
in this fundamental difference and the consequential ramifications.
However, it is possible to take the good points of both and try to
minimise/eliminate the bad points. For example it is necessary to
enquire into the qualifications and experience of any teacher, without
accepting a teacher purely on faith. However, some things require a
large proportion of Shraddha (trust) in the teacher, without necessarily
having the full logical justification (although it may become apparent
later). Also the motivations and aspirations of student and teacher
should be reasonably well aligned.

Some people want to progress on their own without a teacher. Other
people rely too much on a teacher. Either way has its advantages and
disadvantages. My ordinary analogy is this: without a teacher can you
learn to drive a car by yourself (or by merely reading books), or would
you be better off with a driving instructor? Once you have your
licence, you can either move on to more advanced driving courses with
the same teacher or another teacher, or even another subject like
gardening.

Jack.
