Hi Ken,

You may or may not know this, but I thought it relevant to bring it to the
list.

The way I see it is that we have to maintain conscious awareness 24 hours a
day. i.e, from the normal waking state, to being awake in the dream state to
finally being awake in the deep sleep state. I have a book by Tenzin wangyal
Rinpoche titled "The Tibetan yogas of dream and sleep". In it he explains...
"why waste a third of our life
in mindless "samsaric"sleep when we have a golden opportunity to continue
our meditation practice into the night". This could be the equivalent for us
to spend an extra 20 years practising meditation. The dream yogas originate
from esoteric teachings that the Buddha gave to a select few disciples.
During the Buddha's time it was considered the quick way to enlightenment. I
cannot recall where I read this, but the Bon tradition of Tibet is the only
tradition that has to date, kept these teachings alive. Apparently, Tenzin
wangyal Rinpoche states in his book, that in the beginning, we use our night
practice to develop the ability to have lucid dreams. Once this lucid
awareness is established, the next step is to establish ourselves in the
"clear light" dream. This is the dream of emptiness, also known as Rigpa or
"pure non dual awareness" Tenzin says, that this is the state that we have
to aim for in this lifetime because when we eventually die we must bring
this state of pure awareness into the bardo state of becoming. This state
of pure awareness presents us with an opportunity to liberate ourselves from
the wheel of becoming, and thus become enlightened. In other words, he is
saying it is possible to be enlightened in this lifetime.

I personally believe that while the body is asleep and in its most relaxed
state, this in itself, offers us a wonderful opportunity to relax into
deeper awareness, which is not usually possible during our normal day-time
activities. The tranquillity that we are normally aware of when we first
wake
from unconscious sleep is the very same tranquillity that we need in the
mind-awake / body-asleep state. And it is this tranquillity or bliss that we
need to be established in, and thus continue it into our normal daily
activities.

There is a great deal more that could be discussed further here, but
hopefully this is enough for now.

As always,
Dean
