child and the things of childhood was symbolically killed, and the new adult was sent off to visionquest
without food or water for three days alone in the wilds,
till they had a vision that gave them their new name, new sense of self. The child ego is necessary, but once its it was dismantled and released.

Laura wrote that ego is a construct, and that there may exist a vast difference between the way the term "ego" is used in Eastern and Western societies. I sense that is correct.

"Ego" is a term that seems to get tossed around to stand for relevence in so many different activities that has lost it's meaning for me.

I became interested in the Gnostic library found an Nag Hammadi in 1945 when I read Elaine Pagels book on the subject. For the last year or so I have participated in an e-group that uses the Gospel of Thomas from that library. It's been a pretty amazing experience.

There is a constant reference about making the two into one as a precedent for entering into the Kingdom of God. A lot of different opinions are offered as to what exact the two represents, and yet not much argument about what the One means.

Presently, I'm thinking it has to do with bringing the innocence potential of the new-born together with the
socially created civilized human. That, there is a need for both in preparing for what happens when we leave here. A middle path as it were.
