Hi Ken,

My main influence in this god-center argument is the book by Newberg, D'Aquill, and Rause, Why God Won't Go Away.

Their observations seem to imply that when that brain/god-center, which produces the sense of both local and global awareness gets tricked by illogical stimuli like a zen koan (a nasty little car wreck might work.), the local sense of things shuts down and leaves the practitioner with only a global sense of things. After all the barriers (Walls of Jericho?) produced by the pomp and circumstance of microcosmic awareness falls away, an awareness of a greater global presence takes precedence... and that's when the fun begins.

This makes sense to me in both my meditation practice, and upon the onset of the sleep patterns.

Interesting, I once read an article that stated that the earliest vocal phrases one learns as a child makes the most powerful mantras. Reflecting on this possibility, I realized one of the earliest mantras I learned was:

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
If I should die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

In this regard, perhaps our sense of the minutiae of local perception, that we abandon in the process of going to sleep, relates to what we call the soul, as opposed to the grandeur of global awareness available through such states as meditation, dreaming, near-death experiences, or jamming on a musical instrument... among others. Not sweating the details may have huge implications for our spiritual lives. ;-)
