Well said, Hillary.  The brain tends to create metaphors and other tangible  
symbols to represent the spiritual and abstract.  Unfortunately, many people  
get stuck on the symbols and forget what they represent.  This results in  
attachment to the symbols and conflict between those that adhere to  
different belief systems -- stupid. 
 
Years ago I read a book on dream interpretation.  One woman had this  
recurring dream about her legs expanding until her pants exploded.  She  
wasn't sure what the dream meant, but felt it was important.  A superficial  
interpretation might be that she was overeating and concerned about getting  
fat.  However, after a few sessions with a psychologist she realized that  
the dream was a metaphor.  It was a cliché.  She was becoming "too big for  
her britches", and her subconscious was trying to send her a message in the  
dreams. 
 
Remember those neurological studies about stimulating the "god center" in  
the brain?  Of the 900 subjects, each reported a different experience.   
Christians saw Jesus or the Virgin Mary; Moslems saw Mohammed; Buddhists saw  
Buddha; Hindus saw Krishna; New Agers saw advanced aliens, etc.  All these  
visions came from the same stimulus, but manifested differently according to  
the individual's culture and beliefs. 
 
So, I think it's vital to understand that visions are just projections of  
something deeper.  Trying to put them into some external belief matrix  
(like, it was this type of spirit or that) is looking in the wrong  
direction.  If I have a vision I try to remain calm and centered.  Then the  
vision is usually replaced by pure feeling -- spirit if you will -- beyond  
name and form.
