I know there are fundamentalists who will vehemently disagree with me, but I see the greater portion of the Bible as pure metaphor. Jesus told the disciples straight out that they were meant to know the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven and he had to speak in parables to everyone else. "He that hath an ear, let him hear" Which I take to mean,"If you are wise enough to decipher this metaphor, you are wise enough to see its value." This statement is made several times throughout the four gospels.

"Gospel". This is an interesting word. I studied language in college. The word "gospel" is a bastardized contraction of two other words. God/Spell. In other words, if you read the gospels, then God has you under his/her spell. :^) Apropos, non?

Yes, and Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" and my "Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook" :^)

....If God were even remotely interested in condemning anyone...

The Bible has preserved some of the greatest truths ever known. But you can't gleen what it says by interpreting it literally. It took me awhile (and some instruction) to be able to see this. Now I read stories out the Bible and they mean something very different than what is printed on the page.

Jesus praises the wisdom of God once by saying that God has taken the truth and hidden it from those who take pride in their wisdom and revealed it unto children.

Actually, the statement about the Devil is metaphor also. The Devil is the Christian analogy for the human ego. Our egos allow us to justify any action, no matter how "misguided or perverse", using any means possible to avoid responsiblity, even Holy Scripture.
