Subject: [k-list] Stillness and eternity

Riding home on the train, feeling my body bouncing back and forth in
response to the motion of the car. Centrifugal force. Centripetal
force. Nothing in the universe is ever still. Molecules jiggle and
bounce, planets and solar systems rotate and revolve. Galaxies hurtle
endlessly through space fleeing the scene of an ancient explosion.

Nothing is ever still. As quiet as we try to quiet our bodies in
meditation, as much as we try to turn off the disturbance of the senses, we
are still racing about in a myriad of ways.

I remember a debate I once had with a dear friend about the nature of
gravity. Her position was that gravity cannot exist without motion. My
patent objection was that gravity is naturally a factor of mass, regardless
of motion. My physicist uncle put an end to the debate, quite
enigmatically suggesting that we might both be right.

So what, then, I asked myself, is stillness?

Ah, I replied. That is eternity.
