In the Hearts of Us All

In the early summer, when the air is dry, I'll place a galvanized tub on our
back porch. I fill it with tepid water for my daughter. Occasionally the
sound of a cicada will hang nearby. My daughter injoys languishing in the
tub. Water is sparse where we live. This is our reading time and there is
no rush. Last summer we read a story about a young girl who lives in India.
Her name is Parvati and when she dances she becomes one with Shiva. The dry
environment of India and the sound of the cicada came alive in our backyard.
The passion vine climbing our wall burst with purple flowers. After my
daughter got out of her tub she showed me how Parvati might have danced.

We live in a little house. Sometimes I believe it is too small. When I feel
this way my daughter reminds me how much she loves our house. She calls it
the flower house. Once she made a picture of our house and colored it the
same as a rainbow. I painted her bedroom many values of pink. She tells me
that she lives inside of a painting.

My daughter wanted to see a cicada. They live up in the trees in the summer
and are difficult to spot. One day my daughter called to me that a big bug
was crawling up her window. We went outside to look at it. The beautiful
green bug was a cicada. We looked at the bug for a long while. I sang to
it. The bug turned its head to look at us. I offered my finger and it
crawled on. I placed it in a tree.

Once when my daughter was three I showed her a picture of the Dali Lama
sitting in a room decorated with red, orange, and gold. She told me that she
remembered that place from when she was old. I asked her what kind of place
it was and she said, "It was the story of the old."

Sometimes my daughter will sit as though she's meditating. One time she
smiled and looked at me and said, "Mommy, I'm trying to make the clouds move."
