Hi Charles -- I've been driven to help all my life, too -- I'm a psychologist, have done volunteer work in schools, jails, hospice, the whole nine yards. I've learned that some of the best help folks got from me was help I wasn't even aware of giving. About a year ago, the desire to help just stopped. To my amazement, I just felt done. Only during this time of stopping could I see the lingering threads of ego-investment in my selflessness. This was a great lesson because I realized that the whole issue of helping or not helping was beyond my control and that both ego-investment and selflessness are part of the mystery of life. Nowadays you could say that I am helping again, but I don't think about it very much anymore. Let life use you however She may and don't worry about it. We all help each other all of the time.
