I occasionally have similar experiences.
Eyes open, can't move with dream imagery super-imposed
over the physical environment.
Creepy, evil presence. Coulda been my girlfriend.

Personally I just think it's the natural sleep paralysis
combined with some degree of wakefulness.
The evil presence could be one's own sense of self
under a confusing situation.
Could be the devil. :)
If one is not afraid and has a greater degree of lucidity
(as Hillary does)
it can be a blissful experience.
I get another variation of the void.
Cept there's no sense of a body. Just dark nothing.

My last girlfriend snored.
No to tv/radio.
But I do watch tv before sleep which can still program the mind
for lot's of interesting experiences.

Interesting you mention astral travel. reminds of Castaneda's assemblage point shift.
(different way of talking about astral travel). When I was 5 or so I'd experience
the presence as an evil presence. Like a vampire I'd hear it breathing demonically
over me (eyes open, body frozen). Needless to say this scared the shit out of me. When I told
my older sister about it (she was about 13) she made a god's eye which is 2 popsicle sticks
attached with wrapped yarn in the shape of a cross. She tied it on string and told me it
would protect me from the vampire. A night or two later my vampire came back. It seemed to
actually feed off my fear. When I remembered the god's eye it made sounds like it was
recoiling in pain and faded out as I awoke. It never returned.
My mother was unhappy about the god's eye, viewing it as a type of black magic of sorts
and snuck in my room and took the thing when I was asleep the last night it came.
She had inadvertently reinforced my belief in the power of the talisman
because it 'disappeared' that night.
Anyhow, I don't know if these episodes were actual exchanges with some type of
fear-eating energy or all my own projection.
(shrug) I'm not bent on finding out.
Anyhow I heard the Magic Helmet has received official NFL licensing
and will be available in your favorite NFL team. :)
