Dear David and All,

You may have answered your own question in the first sentence:
"Often I dream while being aware of my physical surroundings
which generally is unpleasant because
physiologically in the sleeping state
one is paralyzed."

My experiences of demons and a "presence" in the same room are terrifying. After my last experience (three years ago) I couldn't even sleep on my back for fear of the "demon" trying to attack me again. The presence always comes from outside the doorway and makes its way into my bedroom. Well, lately I've been re-reading, or maybe reading again for the first time, two of my sleep books: Astral Dynamics, by Robert Bruce and Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming by Stephen Laberge, Ph.D. and Howard Rheingold.

I love lucid dreaming. OBE experiences still scare me, and I suppose that's why my higher self knows that for now, lucid dreaming is better. However, I feel that by chance I stumbled on the "correct" explanation of the demon attacks, the fear, the presence, etc., in Robert Bruce's book. He explains "the presence" in the chapter, Waking Paralysis" pages 93 thru 95. The "presence" is US! ;-) A quote from Bruce's book:

"Paralysis and the Physical Body: The mind awakens inside its paralyzed physical body. It may or may not have felt any projection-related exit sensations earlier. It has awakened for a very good reason: Something has just scared the daylights out of its projected double! It has no way of knowing this has happened, though, or that it is actually in the middle of projection. It just wakes up paralyzed and scared, sensing a tangible presence somewhere nearby in the room. It cannot move to see what it is sensing, so its fear steadily increases, and floods along the silver cord and into its projected double, as it fights to break free of the paralysis.....The projected double keenly feels this new surge of fear."

So...since I can't type out the entire chapter, you might want to get the book. The racing heart, the increased and increasing increasing INCREASING FEAR...I've experienced this too. Medical doctors will try and explain the sleep paralysis. Some devise dream helmets. Bruce suggests breaking the paralysis by moving your big toe. I don't think most people will remember this. One pyschic I knew told me to remember to "hitch-hike back to my body" by moving my thumb. This I remembered. It works. Another Vietnamese enlightened soul told me to go to sleep with my hands in a certain position --but that's pretty impossible. Just hitch-hike back to your body. Moving a single muscle while in sleep paralysis will bring everything together and into your physical form. Why the toe or the thumb? These are small muscles and once you're in sleep paralysis, it's totally impossible to move any of your larger muscle groups, even the jaw. So you can't speak either!

I find Bruce's explanation entirely plausible. Don't know as a K-awakened person if OBE's and lucid dreaming are more normal or more frequent, but my surmise is that we are aware perhaps more than others who will <not> remember these dream/OBE states.

My personal opinion is that every night we are projecting from our bodies. Our dreams are as real as what we THINK is real in real life! But real life is an illusion too. Hope some of this helps, David. It certainly may lend a do-able technique to ending your sleep stress.

Love,

Hety

I've seen documentaries on this phenomena
and throughout history this kind of dilemma
was chalked up as interaction with demonic spirits.

Interesting to note
that when this alignment of consciousness & physical paralysis
occurs to me
I always sense some foreign presence...
Usually in the form of an intruder breaking into
the physical space I am sleeping at.
