I think it depends on what you mean by "judge'. Some judgment is necessary for a successful student-teacher relationship. The teacher must judge what the student is ready for, what they need and where the growing must be done.

Whether you are reading "Autobiography of a Yogi" or the Carlos Castaneda books, you will see the teacher makes plenty of judgments about the student: their readiness, their flaws and talents, what practices they need, etc. It is essential, judgment is part of teaching, and most teaching involves some kind of testing to see how the student progresses.

In both cases too, the teacher may not force the student, but they may trick them into doing what is needed. Just as in your "karate kid" example. "Wax on, wax off."

Of course, there is always choice. There may be ultimatums, which is the same as force. "My way or the highway." If they do not want to follow, then why waste the Guru's time? They are better off elsewhere, finding something they can trust, or are more resonant with.

Heh. I have had bad students. Certainly they were educational, but if I concluded that the fault is wholly mine, I'd have to throw in the towel... and nearly have, each time. Perhaps the bad teacher is one who is not discerning in their choice of students.

One can lead a horse to water... but if it will never drink, sooner or later you must give up wasting time in the effort, and choose to lead a more receptive horse... or lead a cow instead. :)

Blessings...
