When you are walking, become the walker/walking

Walking consciously is a simple, but nonetheless amazing tool for
focussing and calming the mind. (insert beautiful anglo-indian/Deepak
Chopra accent):"Yes! Not only does it cleanse the mind, but it actually
reverses the aging process!"
Observe the following syncronicity: Years ago, decades before I ever
heard of kundalini, and long before I began any sort of formal
meditation, I was a long distance backpacker. I walked thousands of
miles on mountain trails, ever in search of the planet's most
outlandish, violent and awesome manifestations. In high, shattered ridge
zones I found the land of no-time; utterly primordial places freshly
hewn by the giant axe of creation. In the sparse lushness of meadows
above treeline I observed a certain logic amidst chaos in the
construction of perfect, spontaneous, magical gardens. The high country
is full of secrets and clues that are unavailable elsewhere. Yet it was
on the long walks to and from these remote places that I intuitively
discovered a kind of walking meditation. Initially I was probably just
trying to ram enough air into my lungs to keep climbing. I found it
useful to create a pattern with my footsteps and my breathing. For
example- four steps for each inhale, and four steps for each exhale. The
pattern tends to adjust itself to the terrain, with a higher ratio of
breaths per step as the difficulty increases. The results of this
measured breathing/walking technique are numerous. One can easily cover
long distances with far less fatigue. It also sort of grounds you into
your environment, allowing you to pay attention to your surroundings. It
can help you achieve a kind of spiritual re-connect with the force of
creation. As an extreme example of this, I once caressed a vertical
stone wall, only to have a beautiful, fully formed crystal pop out of
the rock face and fall into my hand. I've found several crystals in a
similar fashion. They have the strangest way of just popping up when you
are paying attention to your surroundings.
You don't have to cross mountain ranges to use this breathing
technique. It's useful even on short walks. Hope somebody finds this
useful. Any hikers/backpackers on the list?
    onward and upward Michael
