Sabrina,

I installed a two-stage undersink water filter that sits next to my kitchen
faucet, and I use it for drinking water and cooking. In my area (near
Philadelphia), water pollution is a huge issue, and it makes sense to use some
kind of filtering.

Some recommendations for undersink filters:

 - Use a standard two-barrel cartridge filter available at places like Sears.
They're economical, easy to install, and work really well. More expensive
systems (RO, distillation, etc) might work better in certain situations but my
research shows it to be overkill most of the time.

 - Get a water quality report from your water provider, or have your water
tested. The report will tell you what stuff is present in the water and what
you might need to filter against. Then, matching filters is an easy
proposition. Sometimes, the water testing folks won't test for everything, so
you may want to do a little additional research.

 - Keep an eye on the filters' capacity. My filters are good for 6 months, at
my current level of usage. Some filters are good for 500 gallons, others might
be good for 4500. Taste and pressure will change when the filter is shot.

The two filters I use are for (1) chlorine, halides, particulates, and
pesticides; and (2) metals -- lead, cadmium, etc. The difference between
ordinary tap water and the filtered stuff is incredible. And the cost is
minimal, about 5 cents a gallon.

BTW, the Brita filter jug and the filters that attach to the water tap both work
ok, and will get you a step higher on the water quality scale but you're usually
trapped in terms of what kind of filtering you can do. If the stuff you need to
filter in your water is not covered, you're screwed. Most of the single
cartridge types only filter a couple hundred gallons of water at a time and the
cost per gallon is much higher.

Anyway...I'd be happy to share my research with anyone if they'd like to contact
me offlist.
