The sense of smell has been clinicly determined to be one of the greatest
triggers of memory available to the the human mind. Just a whiff of a scent
that we have not smelled for years can take us right back to the place we
were the last time we smelled it....or the first time we smelled it for that
matter.

Now, tie this fact to whatever our emotional state was when we smelled this
particular scent last and we have a methodology to recreate pleasant or
unpleasant emotions. Aromatherapy.

A few examples from my own past. I grew up in Houston TX, parts of which
have a quite unpleasant smell due to the petrochemical industry. I haven't
lived there for years now, but when I drive near a petrochemical plant and
smell the noxious reek, I am teleported back to being strapped into the
backseat of a car and driving to someplace I really didn't want to go.
Definately a feeling of helplessness

On the other hand, I remember visiting my grandparents who lived on a farm
well away from the maniacal-odiferous-money-mongering petrochemical plants
and walking into the house in springtime and smelling Granny cooking
dewberries (a wild Texas blackberry) to make jelly. Smelling them now gives
me a sense a well-being and....well, sort a generous magnanimous feeling--a
sharing of the abundance of the Earth. Sort of the same for cooking tomatoes
in the summertime or the smell of baking bread on a cold winter's day.

Trees have another effect altogether. When I was a child, we would often
escape the reeks of Houston and go and visit the central Texas hill country
(which I have now chosen to make my home). This is an area covering hundreds
of square miles starting at the Austin city limits sign west of town--hills
and valleys a couple of hundred feet in elevation spaced fairly close and
covered in aromatic cedar. Just walking through those forests and breathing,
makes me feel like a kid. I can remember the smell making me feel safe at
night. The darkness would close in and Dad would light off the campfire.
The light and the smell of the smoke would drive away the scary darkness and
make things OK. If you've never smelled cedar burning, I highly recommend
it.

The fir and spruce forests of Colorado have a different effect on me. I find
them mentally stimulating. Like I want to learn about the "bones of the
Earth" and to hunt by stealth and be incredibly aware of my surroundings.

Damn it Jason, now you've gotten completely off-topic! How in the name of
Hell are you gonna tie this personal reminesence in with Kundalini?

This is the thought I had. What if these memories can be tiggered by smell
in different incarnations? What if I smell cooking dewberries three
incarnations from now and feel safe and generous. Will I remember why?
Maybe...if I'm lucky. In this incarnation, why is it when I smell sandalwood
I think of owls. Happens every time.
Is this the basic idea of aromatherapy?

I haven't come across any smells that trigger K, but that might make an
interesting poll......Hillary?

Smell the Love in each Moment,

Jason B
