The hood is full of beggars, cripples, crazies, drunks, druggies,
thugs, hoodlums, dumpster divers, skate punks, bag ladies,
backflip performance artists, stick twirlers, fire eaters,
minstrels, evangelists, promoters and volunteers.

Each clamoring, pleading, hustling,
on bended knees, with cardboard signs,
official looking clipboards with
circles, arrows and diagrams

Sometimes hard to tell desperation
from laziness or artifice
despite weird compulsion to help
I know I can't save them all

but the coins are piling up
from pockets to desktop bowl
to grocery sack on floor
a heap of irrelevant treasure

In the dead of night, pedalling furiously
flinging left, right and over shoulder
the streets are paved with gold
kling, klang, ping! and then silence...
