> Why didn't you use the existing English translation of 'Upadesa Undhiyar'
also known as 'Upadesa Sarah'?

Sri Bhagawan (Ramana Maharshi) rendered Upadesa Undhiyar in Tamil.
A Tamil commentary on Upadesa Undhiyar was written by Saint Sri Sadhu Aum.
It was later rendered into Sanskrit by someone else and was called as
'Upadesa Sarah'.
This Sanskrit rendition has come to be known as the original work of Sri
Bhagawan.

The contents of Upadesa Sarah and Upadesa Undhiyar are different in many key
aspects.
I have reasonable working knowledge of Sanskrit and a very good knowledge of
Tamil.
Tamil is my mother-tongue, I studied all subjects including Science in Tamil
upto Std 11.
And, I am a Brahmin by birth and so we chant mantras in Sanskrit for
worshipping God.
Also, I have been learning Sanskrit over the past 3 years from Samskrit
Education Society.

> Why did you feel the need to do it yourself?
I became a member of the 'Iam' yahoogroups list about 4 years ago.
During the course of the exchange of e-mails as part of postings to the
list,
some members asked me to translate Upadesa Undhiyar into English and post
the same.
Then, I started translating one by one and completed the task in about 3
months.
The translations have been done according to Sri Bhagawan's original
non-dualistic teachings
as clarified by Saint Sri Sadhu Aum.

> you are making up "facts" and finding "scriptural" sources that don't
exist
I cited two or three extracts from the pages of Merging with Siva
about the merging of Ida and Pingala into the Sushumna.

Here is one more citation from the same text on the same topic FROM PAGE
622:
"We have studied the 3 primary currents in the human nerve system.
The AGGRESSIVE intellectual current is masculine, mental in nature
and psychically seen as blue in colour. This current is termed
in Sanskrit PINGALA. The PASSIVE physical current is feminine,
material in nature. This current, which is pink or red is known as IDA.
The 3rd current is spiritual in nature and flows directly through the spine
and into the head. Being yellowish-white, the sushumna,
as it is called, is the channel for pure spiritual energies
that flood into the body through the spine and out into the 6000 miles of
nerve currents. Depending on the nature and dharma, each individual's
energy
expresses itself as predominantly physical or intellectual-
passive or aggressive-or spiritual HOWEVER, IN THE SANNYASIN,
THE 2 FORCES ARE SO PERFECTLY BALANCED THAT NEITHER IS
DOMINANT, AND HE THEREFORE LIVES ALMOST TOTALLY IN THE SUSHUMNA."

Hatha Yoga itself is for balancing the Ida and the Pingala into the Sushumna
only.
Ha stands for Pingala and tha stands for Ida. (page 613)

Apart from these citations, every Tamil Saivaite in Chennai,
who is learned in the ancient Tamil Saivaite scriptures like Tiruvachagam
and Tirumantiram
knows that the Ida and the Pingala have to be merged into the Sushumna.
These ideas keep floating in the discussions in temples, television lectures
and so on.
I too knew them before reading them in Sri Gurudeva's Merging with Siva.
I can also cite from the most authentic source on Saivism, namely,
Tirumantiram.

Yours in God
RK Shankar
