The ego can't detach itself, i.e., we can't liberate ourselves by will. What
actually happens is that when we get a glimpse of truth, that we are all the
same One, the ego is seen to be a virtual function. The individual self is
then known to have no substance, it only appears to exist. As the identity
then shifts to being the One, the human personality is worn very lightly and
unselfconsciously -- in order to continue living in the world. Less and less
in life is taken personally. Holly
