Thank you for writing, Connie. While no one can definitively state exactly
what is going on in a particular person, I can point you toward a non-dual
truth that is illuminated by most of the world's mystical traditions and that
has been experienced by a great number of people on this list: The "I" that
we know is not, in truth, a personal "I," but is the same "I" that inhabits
all creation. We are not our bodies or our minds even though we use these
faculties to inhabit the world as one might don a spacesuit. When one wakes
up to this truth, it feels like one's selfhood is no longer solely contained
within the body-mind (although these continue to exist and function as usual)
and one's selfhood seems to have expanded infinitely in all directions.
Because one's identity is no longer confined to the body, one's feelings are
not experienced in the same way -- they are less intensely personal. There
may be new feelings of joy or overwhelming sorrow. Two classical teachers I
can recommend are Ramana Maharshi and Sri Nisargadatta. More contemporary
descriptions are found in the works of Douglas Harding, Suzanne Segal and
Bernadette Roberts. You have a lot of courage to consider your condition and
history from a spiritual point of view. My hat's off to you. Holly
