Begging your pardon, but it's Maya.  'The calling did not make you a Maya.' Mayan would be used for the language or art, in a descriptive sense.  E.g., The Mayan language is still alive today...The people are the Mayas.

Actually, the language(s) and even the people/descendants are not long dead.  Today there are over five million people speaking Maya languages and many preserve calendrical and religious knowledge as old as the culture.  Languages (and there were many) such as Tzotzil and Tzeltal are published and interestingly, the Mayas are compared to the Welsh in their refusal to give up culture and language.
