What do you mean "we have no knowledge of at all"? When Kundalini
is manifest (that is, when my breathing and discursive thinking have
ceased, when I hear a roaring like I'm under a waterfall, and I am
filled with bliss) I can clearly feel an erotic sensation below my
navel, bursting compassion in my chest, and a super-aware inner
light radiating from inside my head. Because I am so aware in this
state, it feels more real than the everyday consciousness of
watching T.V., walking to the store, etc.
After having experienced this, I can read a spiritual book and
relate to certain statements. For example, I can read about the
charkas and say, "hey, that erotic sensation below my navel is the
second chakra, the compassion I felt in my heart was the fourth
chakra", and so on. I can read revelation, and when St. John says
he "heard the sound of many waters" right before his vision of
heaven, I can say, "I know what you're talking about. I heard that
too".
I checked-out a lot of religions and philosophies in my day too, and
found most of them wanting, because they required belief.
Traditional religions told me that the bible (or Koran, or Vedas, or
whatever) was the "word of God". Wait a minute... doesn't Christ
say "store not your treasures on earth, where dust and rust doth
corrupt"? Isn't the bible a 2000 year old book, written by men who
are now dead, on the pressed pulp from dead trees, and translated
many times by men of dubious motives? Sure many religious texts are
inspirational, but they have to resonate with my inner spirit.
Taking a particular book and saying it's the absolute truth is
idolatry as much as worshiping a golden calf.
Yoga however said, meditate and see for yourself. Experience it for
yourself. Be still and know.
I don't understand what you mean by needing to have "passed over" in
order to "categorize and make distinctions", by the way.

Points of view are as myriad as the grains of sand in a desert. I
can believe the moon is made of green cheese, but that doesn't make
it so. It's perception (not necessarily limited to the five senses)
that matters.
The "astral plane" is a name given to a realm between the physical
and causal (ideas). It's the realm of dreams. I've woken-up in a
dream a few times (lucid dreaming) and was as conscious of the
experience as I typically am on the physical plane.

Again, this is not a belief system; it's direct experience. And
when one feels Kundalini rise up through the body, one returns to
earth with the clear knowledge that the Self transcends the physical
body.
