Twenty years ago (you don't forget these kind of experiences) I had
a similar lucid dream. I was inside a large house with a radiant
red carpet that had an intricate pattern of black lines on it. In
the dream I wandered around a bit, eventually climbing up to the
stairs to the top of the house where there was a door. When I
reached the door I had a strong feeling that I shouldn't open it.
However, since it was a dream, I knew I could just put my arm
through the door. In fact, I felt compelled to see what was on the
other side, even though I was fearful. So, because of that impulse
to check out the other side, I mechanically let my hand then whole
arm go through the door to the other side. Immediately I touched as
well as saw a seething mass of people, standing shoulder to
shoulder, all of whom seemed to be in a frantic state of mind. The
people started grabbing at my arm and began pulling me through the
door. Since this frightened me, I immediately woke-up.

About two weeks later my second wife and I moved to an apartment in
the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. Shortly after moving in I was
walking down the common hallway and happened to look at the floor.
The carpet was red with an intricate pattern of black lines, just
like in the dream! I tried to rationalize that I subconsciously
chose the apartment because of the dream, but even if that were
true, how could I have seen the carpet weeks before I had ever
physically entered the building? By the way, the apartment turned
out to be a great place and was a great price for Brentwood.

As to the meaning and symbolism in the dream; I feel the house
represented my body, my inner world, and the people at the top
represented the world outside my body trying to distract me from the
inner reality. I read once (it might have been Jung) that you are
the best interpreter of what things mean in a dream. This is why I
have always considered books that list dream symbols and their
meaning (like a glossary of computer terms) to be of dubious value.
Jung also warned against using symbols from cultures other than your
own. For example, a dragon represents good luck in the East, but
represents evil forces in the West. In an audience I once had with
Soeng Sunim (the patriarch of Korean Zen), a member of the audience
(a young Asian man) said he had recurring nightmares about Buddha
and Jesus fighting - a clear war between eastern and western
symbols. The Zen master told him, "there are many paths up the
mountain". Personally, I have assimilated and am comfortable with
many eastern symbols, but one should be sensitive to the dangers of
symbol conflicts.

At the risk of misinterpreting your dream (only you really know the
true meaning), it may symbolize an expanding consciousness - going
from a small room to a skyscraper. I recommend you reflect on what
the symbols mean to you. Be patient about lucid dreams too. They
are powerful and usually quite rare (in my case anyway).

With love and peace,

Ken
