Hi,

It was mentioned a while back that Waking Life
would be a good movie to rent. So I did.

I couldn't watch more than a third of it.
The constant wiggling, drifting background
animation made my eyes hurt and my belly
slightly sea sick.

The plotless, constant stream of social/
metaphysical/intellectual chit chat was
at times original and clever, but more
often it insulted my intelligence. I kept
having the suspicion that the film maker
was subtly making fun the things we
talk about on this list and/or the
contemporary banter one overhears
in a college town coffee house.
Another "we're-gonna-change-reality-dude"
open mic at the bookstore.

It all seemed too smug and packaged.
An *Art Film* with a capital A.
Independent film is becoming an industry
in itself. Waking life is such a slick, "hip"
package that it almost seems like a major
in indi's clothing.

The movie's still playing in the next room.
Still a long string of (mercifully) abbreviated
existential essays and pop spirituality with one
scene morphing into another... and another...
and another.

The movie just finished. I read the credits and
indeed, it was a major in IFC clothing. Nothing
wrong with that, but I'm still hoping a movie
about the truly dramatic experience of awakening
would be made some day, not just an
exhaustive, routine intellectual trek through the
old spiritual/philosophical Rubik's cube bookended
with a little Gen X swagger.

I want my $1.99 back.

No, on second thought, finding out that I didn't
care for Waking Life cartoon was worth $1.99.... I suppose.

Paul
