  there was (this is FYI, BTW) a show on The Learning Channel last fall...
it concerned tracing the DNA back... World wide, DNA scientists are a VERY
nosey bunch...
and they found out that through the female, its possible to trace ancestral
linkage. the (forgive the spelling) mytrochondrial DNA, is ONLY passed
through the female, and every certain amount of time, it mutates in a very
regular, predictable way...
So, they discovered that covering the entire earth- EVERYONE, actually
descended from about some number of under 1,000 females, in a period of
time of about 75-80,000 years back...
what happened to kill people off????

  one day, one of the scientists was killing time, and sit in on a lecture
given by a friend of his, on vulcanology... and said friend remarked there
are super volcanos, big massive HUGE volcanos... around the world, and the
last time one erupted was 76,000 years back....
the volcano mouth was about 35 by 50 MILES in size, and it erupted for some
unknown period of time, but it effectively covered the earth in ash and
soot, throwing the entire world into what is termed a nuclear winter...for
several decades afterwards...

now, the geologists knew that there were a lot of people in the time frame
before this one, but afterwards there was a severe lessening in the number,
for many generations, and now they knew why....

(PS, we got one of these monster volcanos, here in the US)
