I've always wondered... with all the different plants
all over the world... and all the thousands of usable
herbs, drugs and foods that come from them, I mean,
like, who found out about all that stuff?

Somebody at some time had take note that a certain
part of the root of a certain plant picked at the right
time of year and prepared in a certain way would
do a certain thing.

I could just picture the trial and error of generations of
hunter/gatherers, daring alchemists, and unfortunate
royal tasters falling over in agony before one jumps
of and says, "Hey! This is the good stuff!"

By all means, "the gods must be crazy." :-)
