On 2002/06/11 09:09, Lbra782595 posted thus to the K-list: Hello Victoria,

Speaking as someone with some experience with illegal drugs, let me say that
there are benefits and deficits to any use hallucinogens or narcotics.

Drugs in general are a shortcut to altered consciousness. What the Yogi must
work several years to achieve can be done almost instantly with various
chemical substances. If you have ever read Carlos Casteneda, a great deal
of what he discusses has to do with herb lore or the brujos of Mexico. Many
of the herbs they use are quite hallucinogenic. Jimson weed, peyote, and
marijuana are all used ritually to enhance consciousness. This is a very
ancient knowlege dating from the very eary inhabitants of Central and South
America.

The elder brujos act as guides for the new initiates. They have been down
the road of hallucinations and instruct the younger ones on how to pass
various obstacles, overcome fears and protect themselves from "evil
sorcerers". If you insist on using drugs ritually or for meditational
purposes, I highly recommend a guide to help you.

Also, drugs usually have some nasty side effects, peyote makes you vomit
uncontrollably; marijuana reduces IQ and reflexes and according to my kriya
yoga teacher, numbs parts of the corpus callosum in the brain and keeps the
hemisperes from communicating with each other properly. LSD and mushrooms can
create vivid images that cannot be separated from reality and can cause panic
attacks and acute paranoia. And any drug like this may leave you vulnerable
to energies you are not yet prepared to deal with.

I do think that chemical substances can bring a valid experience of the
divine, but only in the beginning. True enlightenment requires all mental
facilities to be functioning at optimum levels. If your IQ drops down into
the sixties because of ingesting a chemical, you would not be able to
comprehend something profound that you discovered in meditation.

Drugs can give a jump start on a spiritual path, but must ultimately be
eliminated to reach enlightenment. Besides, when you acheive that same level
of consciousness on your own it's much more rewarding. Liberating too,
because your not having to rely on someone else to sell you your next
"trance".

This is my own take on chemically enhanced consiousness others may have
different experiences than my own. I urge caution. Drugs have been reported
as a catalyst for some very strong K experiences as well as uncontrolled "out
of body" trips. K is better than drugs anyway.

Sincerely,

Jason B
